In the Czech Republic, 19,625 new musical compositions were registered last year. Songwriting Camp CZ also helped

Czech music is on the rise. This is confirmed by figures published by the OSA on the occasion of World Intellectual Property Day yesterday. While the OSA registered 16,424 new songs in 2020, the number rose to 19,756 in 2021 and 19,625 last year. Authors are also helped by the annual Songwriting Camp CZ powered by the OSA. Since 2018, it has already added 128 new songs to the music scene.

"The statistics should be taken with a grain of salt, as not all songs are registered immediately after being written. However, they have a certain significance and I am glad that they show the positive development of Czech authorship. Between 2020 and 2021, the whole segment was affected by COVID-19, which mainly affected the economics of the music industry. On the other hand, I am pleased that this turbulent period has apparently not deprived Czech authors of inspiration and creativity. In this context, I would like to highlight the contribution of songwriting camps," says Roman Strejček, chairman of the OSA Management Board.

Songwriting camps are an increasingly popular international platform for modern music creation. They bring connections with international artists, new collaborations and the challenge of teamwork and creating a song in a few days. In the Czech Republic, the Songwriting Camp is organised every year by musician Jan Vávra in cooperation with the OSA. It is a four-day intensive project in the peaceful environment of the Šumava forests with the aim of collaborating and creating new songs with an international scope. The event has the potential to put Czech pop authors on the European music map.
