Who Are We and What Do We Do?

OSA - Society for the Protection of the Rights of Music Authors and Publishers


  • established in 1919 by Czech composers, lyricists, and music publishers
  • is a not-for-profit civic association representing more than 5800 composers, lyricists, music publishers and heirs of rightsholders
  • represents, on the basis of reciprocal contracts with affiliated protective rights societies, nearly one million foreign authors
  • has a repertoire containing more than 285,000 compositions
  • has as its primary activity the collective administration of authors‘ rights to musical works and lyrics set to music. In particular, its activities are primarily concerned with granting permits for the use of works and collecting and paying royalty fees to authors, their heirs and music publishers
  • ensures the legal use of musical works
  • is also of major benefit to commercial users. Through OSA they can obtain permission to perform all musical works of registered persons. Without OSA, it would be necessary for them to ask authors, heirs and music publishers individually for such permission
  • is a member of the international societies which protect authors‘ rights: CISAC, BIEM and GESAC
